Boastful Steve Komphela taunts Downs,

Steve Komphela has shot a warning across the bow of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by stressing mental strength will be the key to championship success following the league leaders dropping of points on Saturday.

The mind games have truly begun after Sundowns were held at home by Golden Arrows, followed immediately by a hard-fought - not to mention a touch fortunate - triumph for Kaizer Chiefs over SuperSport United in Cape Town.

Goals from George Maluleka and Willam Twala helped Amakhosi win, while Jeremy Brockie scored for Matsatsantsa.

"The gap is slowly getting narrow and it's about mental strength. A slight hiccup and it starts a big question mark over confidence. To stay there at the top you need to be strong," he taunted his rivals.

"What we need to do now is keep our rhythm, our feet on the ground because I am so privileged to have a group of players who know how to win championships."

Asked by one reporter, after Chiefs' 2-1 victory at the Cape Town Stadium, whether their dream of retaining their title was still on, Komphela replied with a swift, "it has never been off".

"Maybe those who are outside saw it differently but for us it's never been off. The fact that there was a draw for Sundowns triggered a desire for us to do even better and even think about going all the way [to winning the title]."

Komphela also used his own club's past failings as an example of how runaway leaders can implode as they approach the finish line. Sitting next to former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter after Saturday's win, Komphela said: "He [Baxter] can testify, there was a season (2013-14) where he was leading by 12 points and he lost it to Sundowns by a point or two. That tells you how strong you need to be to stay there."
