Guptas leave South Africa

The Gupta brothers slunk out of South Africa at 11pm on Thursday night‚ days after they‚ and Zuma’s son Duduzani‚ resigned from the board of Oakbay Resources and Energy.

With enough luggage for 20 people‚ they left in their private jet from Lanseria airport‚ near Johannesburg‚ according to a report in City Press.

It has also been reported that their Saxonwold residence in Johannesburg was deserted.

A third brother lives in Dubai.

Despite the resignations the Guptas remain the main shareholders. Zuma Jr resigned as a nonexecutive director of Shiva Uranium.

The Business Times reported on Sunday that the resignation on Friday of Atul and Varun Gupta‚ and Zuma Jr is apparently linked to their bid to secure funding to purchase Optimum Coal.

Optimum Coal has a 30-year contract to supply coal to Eskom.

The resignations were also prompted by the need to appoint new bankers and auditors after Absa‚ FNB‚ Sasfin and auditors KPMG withdrew their services.

It’s believed that Nedbank has cut ties and Standard Bank would not confirm or deny whether it too had severed links.

The Dubai connection is linked to Department of Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane and Des van Rooyen‚ who was appointed minister of finance after President Jacob Zuma sacked Nhlanhla Nene.

The Sunday Times reported that the two made mystery trips to Dubai late last year while the Guptas were there.

Zwane travelled there in December while on a trip to Zurich‚ and refused further assistance from the embassy and South African diplomats. Van Rooyen visited Dubai for one day for a holiday‚ he says.

President Jacob Zuma made a last-minute change on his recent trip to Saudi Arabia and visited Dubai.
