Muvhango robbed of R4.5-million by accountant

SABC2 soapie Muvhango's production house Word of Mouth Pictures has been defrauded of about R4.5-million.

One accountant has been fired and the second is being investigated for allegedly siphoning money from the production company's account during a period of over a year.

Muvhango publicist Amanda Ngudle confirmed the acts of fraud and said arrests were imminent after the company conducted a forensic investigation relating to the disappearance of millions of rands from the Word of Mouth account.

"A forensic investigation has led to a suspension of the bank account of the employee.

"The investigation is continuing," said Ngudle.

"The company has managed to identify and curb the abuse, hence the suspension of the employee."

Ngudle said despite the fraud, no Muvhango actors were going to lose their jobs.

"There shall be no job losses.

"In fact, we just signed new contracts with all of our employees, except with Phindile Gwala (Nonny), who resigned last month.

"We've been paying actors as normal while the employees were being investigated.

"So there, nothing has changed," said Ngudle.

Muvhango has been previously hit by several incidents of non-payment of actors and support staff due to its bank account running empty.

Last October shooting at Muvhango studios in Auckland Park allegedly came to a standstill as angry actors and support staff downed tools after their September salaries were not paid.

Two years ago producers of the well-liked, predominantly Tshivenda soap opera, took a decision to write off all the actors starring as the influential Mukwevho family.

At the time, Ngudle said, the termination of the contracts was as a result of the the revamping of the soapie and planned introduction of new characters.

The sacked actors were Tshidi Vera (Moriti), John Morapama (Lerumo), Rantebeng Makapan (Morapedi), Phuti Khomo (Carol), Snenhlanhla Mdlalose (Mangwashe) and Tryphina Gavaza (Tryphina).
